Ashley Ridge QB returns, looks for big 2014 season

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) – At Ashley Ridge High School, the Swamp Foxes are seeking a big improvement over their last two 4-8 seasons.

This year the team is hoping to end that trend and has been thinking a bit more like the 2011 team that notched 10 wins and a deep playoff run. The offense is looking for a big boost from a former, and now once again, quarterback.

At 6-feet, 5-inches tall and 225 pounds, Steven Duncan stands out in a crowd.

“We're happy to have Steven back. He's got a strong arm and extends plays, can throw the ball downfield on the run. He's a leader on the team, and we certainly enjoy having him back,” said Coach Kenny Walker.

The starting quarterback for the Swamp Foxes is back at Ashley Ridge after spending a year tossing touchdowns for a season at Porter Gaud.

“To be back at the Ridge, it's a great experience. There's a lot more competition up at the 4A level, a lot better players. It's a big family here,” said Duncan.

“We put a lot of time and effort into this. We do a lot of planning in our lifting programs, and our workouts, practices everything. We want more out of it because we put a lot in to it. I think this team has the opportunity to be a pretty good football team,” said Walker.

Walker says his team is looking for more – more wins, more improvement from the entire team not just the guy taking snaps.

“There's more to the team than the quarterback. I think our wide receiving corps gives him an opportunity to help him make big plays for us. Our offensive line is experienced, they've been around; they can protect him,” said Walker.

Duncan said making the decision to come back the Swamp Foxes was an easy one.

“It wasn't that difficult, it's such a family. So many good people around here, it's just a better experience. The fans are crazy; everyone here is crazy about football. It's a great experience,” Duncan said.

The Swamp Foxes are focusing week by week, even though they have one particular date already circled on the calendar: Oct. 31.

“Probably playing Summerville, playing Summerville at home on Halloween,” he said.

The long journey to Halloween starts Friday night for the Foxes against Woodland.
