Hootie sends ‘get well’ card to King Street sucker punch victims

Posted: Updated:

BLUFFTON, S.C. (WCIV) – After a man was sucker punched on King Street during a rare night out to a concert and some Charleston nightlife, the victims got a “get well” card and some flowers from an unexpected source.

Hootie and the Blowfish sent Billy and Ashley Schilling flowers. They arrived on Thursday with a note that read: "Thinking of you. Wishing you a speedy recovery," and it was signed Hootie and the Blowfish.

The couple had gone to see the Hootie Home Grown concert and then to downtown Charleston as a first weekend out since having a baby. They were on King Street when a man hit Billy Schilling in the face, hospitalizing him.

Police arrested 27-year-old James Hutton a week after the incident and charged him with second-degree assault and battery. He was released a day later on a surety bond.

According to Ashley Schilling, the violence started when the men Hutton was with made lewd comments towards her and her husband called them out on it.

The two groups kept walking past each other, Ashley Schilling said, but then one of the men turned around, ran back into Schilling's group, and hit Billy Schilling.

Billy Schilling was taken to Medical University Hospital.

He has since been released and is improving every day at their Bluffton home, said Ashley Schilling. They said the outpouring of support has been incredible and they are humbled by the number of people offering to help.

An online fundraiser has been set up in the Schillings' name to help them pay for bills while Billy recovers.

The Schillings say they do not know how Hootie and the Blowfish got their address or found out about the incident.
