Police: Teen arrested at Sertoma for having gun

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 15-year-old North Charleston boy was arrested Friday night at the Sertoma Classic football scrimmage for carrying a gun.

According to Charleston police, a citizen told officers the teen had a handgun, and when officers approached him the teen ran up the stairs at the Altman Athletic Center.

Police say an officer was waiting at the top of the stairs so the teen tried to run back down stair, throwing the gun as he ran.

According to police, the gun never made it to the field, contrary to other reports at the field. Police now have custody of the teen and the gun.

Police say the teen is being taken to the Charleston County Detention Center for holding.

Just down the street from Johnson Hagood Stadium where the Sertoma games were being played, police also responded to reports of shots being fired near a fast food restaurant. Police have not released details about the suspect, but several officers are out searching the area.
