Juvenile, 16, arrested on gun charges after shots fired at Spring Street McDonalds

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – While police officers took one teen into custody for having a gun at the Sertoma Classic games at Johnson Hagood Stadium, another person was nearby shooting at a fast food restaurant.

According to Charleston police, officers were sent to the McDonalds franchise on Spring Street around 10 p.m. in reference to a large crowd gathering in the area after Sertoma had ended.

The manager had asked for help dispersing the crowd, officials said. That's when someone opened fire from the Taco Bell parking lot across the street.

Police say one shot hit the McDonalds building within a few feet of responding officers, but police are not certain anyone was shooting at the officers.

Police say a witness told officers he saw a black man fire several shots and then run toward Hagood Avenue. The alleged shooter was apparently in a black, collared shirt with some kind of logo on it, police said.

Other patrol officers spotted a man matching that description on Ashton Street and tried to chase him down, but lost sight of the man.

K-9 units were used to search the area, police said, which led to the find of a handgun behind an Ashton Street home. Another gun was found outside the Taco Bell, covered by pine straw.

Officers searching the area also found shell casings in the Taco Bell parking lot and damage to a car window. Inside the car were two more guns, police said.

A short time later, a group of teens approached the officers and said they wanted to get in the car. Police said one of the teens showed the keys and admitted to driving it earlier.

As a result, the teen was arrested and charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a handgun. He is being held at the juvenile detention center.

Police are still trying to determine who fired the shots at the McDonalds.
