CCSD board sets priority in construction projects

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) – The Charleston County School Board discussed a list of more than 30 projects it would like to see happen by the year 2022 at Monday night's meeting.

The list, which many imagined would be organized in a 35-point list by school, was actually split into two lists: the core and the contingent.

It's a wish list that includes an $80 million high school in Mount Pleasant and an addition to Moultrie Middle. Both projects are among the core list and have many supporters, especially east of the Cooper River.

“No further delays, please. Let's move forward with this so we can see it done,” said Paul Gawrych.

But a project's fate depends on which list it sits.

The core list includes 20 projects that will take priority with money from a voter-approved sales tax. The 20 projects would total $427 million and be paid for by the one-cent sales tax.

The contingency list would only happen if the sales tax collected exceeds expectations.

“This gives us a blueprint to address problems,” said Todd Garrett, a member of the board. “I don't agree with everything on the list, but if we don't do it through sales tax then we will have to go through property taxes. Those sales taxes, 40 percent comes from tourists.”

The only thing to change in Monday night's meeting was taking the advanced design of Lincoln High School from the contingent list and moving it to the core list.

The total price of that project is $500,000.

Voters will decide on the fate of the one-cent sales tax in November.
