MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- It's football night in America and the ABC News 4 team is spread across the Lowcountry picking up highlights from more than a dozen of them.

West Ashley romps past Bishop England, 55-14
By Andrew Miller
Post and Courier

DANIEL ISLAND -- Bishop England coach John Cantey has always searched out the toughest opponents to start the season.

Cantey, who led the Bishops to back-to-back Class AA state titles in 2011 and 2012, is firm believer that playing the bigger and better programs will help prepare his team for region play when it rolls around later in the season.

Cantey and Bishops probably got a little more preparation than they bargained for Friday night against West Ashley.

West Ashley running back Cameron Byas rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown, while quarterback Justin Berry tossed three more TDs and ran for another score as the Wildcats romped past the Bishops, 55-14, at Bishop England High School in the season opener for both teams.

"West Ashley played very well, you have to give them a lot of credit," Cantey said. "Our defense struggled tonight, we've got a lot of young guys out there that are just not used to playing at this speed. We've got to get the best competition before the region starts. That's when it really counts. This game will help us. It'll help us get ready when the games matter the most."

Stratford begins new era with win at Berkeley
By David Shelton
Post and Courier

MONCKS CORNER -- The Joe Marion era at Stratford High School has officially begun, and in positive fashion.

Marion, who replaced Stratford's Ray Stackley as head coach this spring, led the Knights to a 38-21 road win over county rival Berkeley on Friday night. Marion had been an assistant at Stratford since 1988 before he was named to replace Stackley, who won 270 games in 29 seasons as head coach.

It's a relief to get this first game out of the way," said Marion. "I'm proud of our football team. We started a little slow because we had to adjust to Berkeley's team speed, but I thought we did a good job for a first game. Now we can move on and focus on the rest of the season. I'm happy I got the first win out of the way tonight."

The victory was also the first for Stratford's new starting quarterback, senior Jamison Mobbs, who inherited the job from four-year starter Jacob Park, the 2013 Mr. Football now at Georgia.

Turnovers spark Ashley Ridge to a 56-21 rout of James Island
By Neill Kirkpatrick
Post and Courier

JAMES ISLAND -- In the span of 8 minutes and 32 seconds, four turnovers turned a very competitive game into a rout as visiting Ashley Ridge scored 21 unanswered points to defeat James Island, 56-21, in high school football.

"We were able to force some turnovers but the key was converting them into points," said Ashley Ridge head coach Kenny Walker.

Ironically, it was an Ashley Ridge turnover that started the Trojans' free fall.

After the Swamp Foxes stopped the Trojans on at their own 23-yard line, quarterback Steven Duncan hit Dedrick Spence for a 32-yard gain to the JI 46 with 43 seconds to go in the first half.

After two incompletions, on third down Duncan threw into the end zone and his pass was picked off by the Trojans' Ryan Braswell.

Braswell brought it out of the end zone and appeared to have running room down the right side. Then he was hit and fumbled the ball, which was picked up by the Swamp Foxes' Connor Beloff. He returned it for a touchdown with one second left on the clock. The score made it 28-14 in favor of Ashley Ridge.

Wando cruises past White Knoll, 45-13
By Frankie Mansfield
Post and Courier

MOUNT PLEASANT -- A mob of garnet followed cornerback Dakaire Alston as he streaked into the end zone after an 85-yard interception return with just seconds to play.

It was a fitting end to a second-half defensive masterpiece.

Wando scored 45 unanswered points in the second half to run away with a 45-13 win over White Knoll in the Warriors' season high school football debut Friday.

Alston's interception was the seventh turnover forced by the Wando defense in the second half.

"They were ready to play a physical Class AAAA ballgame," Wando head coach Jimmy Noonan said. "I'm very proud of our defense tonight."

Summerville Green Wave gut out 15-13 win at Cane Bay
By Roger Lee
Post and Courier

SUMMERVILLE -- Summerville quarterback Sawyer Bridges threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first half, but Cane Bay made the visiting Green Wave rally for a 15-13 victory Friday night.

Bridges threw a 29-yard TD pass to senior David Coccoli and a 20-yard TD pass to Krishaon Jackson to give the Green Wave a 12-0 lead entering the half. The extra point kick after the first TD was no good and a two-point conversion pass following the second was defended by the Cobras.

But Cane Bay rallied the final two quarters, taking a 13-12 lead in the fourth.

"We were moving the ball but then we got a 15-yard penalty and it seemed like we just wilted," Summerville coach John McKissick said. "After that, they out-played us on both sides of the football."
