RED TOP, S.C. (WCIV) -- Labor Day is the biggest day of the year for the small community of Red Top near west Ashley. Hundreds came out for the annual parade, which had all the classic elements: Corvettes, fire trucks and marching bands. But, it also had something else.

“A lot have moved away but they take this day for all of us to come together,” Joann Wright Weston said.

“The community depends on this parade,” organizer Barbara Wright said.

Wright organized the parade and the following lawn party. She said 2014 was the 47th year of the event. It featured eight churches that came together to feed stomachs and smiles, and give kids somewhere safe to spend the holiday.

"Red Top is a very close knit, loving family. We really try to open the doors for our young people. We make things happen for them. Keep them off the street. Give them positive things in life to look forward to so one day they can do the same thing," Wright said.

Barbara Brown came for the first time Monday. She said the feeling of community will bring her back

“It's nice to see people come together for an occasion other than funerals. It's not a family reunion. It's people just coming out in the community and enjoying themselves,” Brown said.

Churches and community members donate all food and favors at the parade. Everything is free for all who attend.
